Callaway X16 irons

While Callaway makes great woods (Big Bertha, ERC, C4, etc), their irons, in my mind, have never been quite up there.
At least that was my impression until the guys at Pan West lent me a demo set of X16 Steelhead irons. I accepted the offer to test the set with all the enthusiasm of a kid facing a spoonful of castor oil.

Some days later, I used it in a game with a golfing buddy with a penchant for betting on the fairways. To cut a long story short, moi was one very happy golfer that evening as I counted my winnings at the '19th hole'. The fact that I, a 13 handicapper, had beaten him (8 handicap) for the first time was all the more remarkable given that I had done it with this X16 set which I was using for the first time. Understandably, my opinion of Callaway irons has changed forever.

Seriously, the X16 irons may just be the best irons Callaway Golf has ever made. Sublime balance, extreme forgiveness and a huge sweet spot - thanks to patented Variable Face Thickness (VFT) technology - give the irons a degree of playability few other clubs can boast of.
I knew these irons were special the moment I started going through my pre-shot routine with a 5-iron before making my first 160 metre approach to the green. To put it simply, the X16 not only felt solid on impact, it is probably one of the most accurate irons I've ever used.
Callaway has incorporated all the elements of its X-Technology from its popular X14 irons into the X16 - patented S2H2, Tru-Bore, 360-degree undercut, VFT, etc. And for an encore, it has made the loft spacing between clubs more consistent, thus reducing distance 'gaps' - a key weakness in most iron sets.

The irons come in both regular and Pro Series models - the latter has 0.125 inch less offset.
The X16 retails at Pan West outlets, with graphite sets costing $2,366, and the steel sets priced at $1,866
The standard
X-16 Irons have a shorter blade length and a higher topline than the
X-14 irons, with the benefit of Callaway Golf's new "Notch"
weighting. This moves the weight to the perimeter for strong,
confidence-enhancing look behind the ball. Each iron has a low
center of gravity for strong trajectory and great forgiveness, a
cambered sole for better turf interaction, and a soft satin finish
with a contrasting, sandblasted hitting area. The graphite shafts
give you the flex options that you want - with the options to
benefit varied swing speeds and styles.

<BR clear=al

Went the the Callaway fit center at Las Vegas and they suggested the x16 at 2 upright. I thought somethings wrong because I'm only 5 9" tall. But at their driving range, all my balls with the 2 degree up went straight. After some thought I purchased a full set plus the A wedge (I traded in my old set of GBB with graphite shaft). The clubs had to be ordered special and it took 2 weeks to arrive. I played 18 holes within 12 hours of getting the new set. My eyes are still wide open and amazed. Shot my lowest round at the local course. I know it wasn't my driver or tee shots because I hit only 50% of my fairways. It was my approch and chip that made the difference. The PW and AW are butter. The AW is great for chipping, used it 8 times from 40 to 10 yards out and hit my mark 7 times. Had a hard time contolling chipping distance with the GBB.

Where I had a fight with a draw hook with my GBB, now I play a light fade. Most shots go straight. Even toe shots go dead straight with a loss in distance

Good stuff:
Straight
Ball flight medium (my GBB went high)
Distance with steel match my GBB with graphite.
Pitching and A wedge are great. Puts so much spin on the ball I was scuffing my balls all day. Must of my approch would bounce and land within 3 feet of my divot. First time for me. I will be getting the Sand and Lob in the future.
Styling, to me, is much better then the GBB or VFT. Still like the x 14 look better.
Steel constant weight shaft great for anyone with swing speeds from 65 to 95 on the 5 iron (I'm at 88 and my sons at 98 and he likes the shafts also).
Long irons get airborne quickly without flying too high. I now play 4 iron and down. I previously played 5 and down. Put away my nine wood for a while.

Bad stuff:
Even though I got a discount because of my trade in. The selling price is still 699 plus 89 per club. No discounts on new clubs any time soon.
The face length is a little shorter then the x14 so it does look a little stubby. The top line is larger then the x14 but much smaller then my GBB. Overall, it looks okay but not as sleek at the x14 (always like the style of the x14)
The PW is 46 and the A wedge is 50. Man the lofts are getting low on the newer sets. But because the ball bites hard, it hasn't been that bad. I'll have to see if the SW and LW does the same.

Overall:
Great set up clubs.
Callaway service was outstanding and so is their product. Get fitted. Man it really makes the difference.

This is still my honeymoon period and I will update after the luster has faded. But so far its a great ride.
